An Application
1KI 1:10 Solomon was 10th in line so David must've made it clear Solomon was expected to be next for Adonijah to fear him, specifically. Adonijah was not presuming to be next in line, he was acting pre-emptively to take the throne before his father crowned his favored, younger brother. Maybe in another kingdom his deception may work, but this was God's country, and God chose the kings, either explicitly or through His providence.
Connect the Dots
1KI 1:2 remember he had 8 wives (if you think this recommendation was bad, wait until we get to Xerxes.) The Abishag arrangement must've been to avoid the king playing favorites with any of the wives or concubines to avoid political ramifications after his death. Wise choice, since a variation of this is exactly what still happens (for another reason) in 3 stories. / Compare 1KI 1:5 to 2SA 15:1, 1KI 1:6 to 2SA 14:25, and LEV 19:17b.
